Description
Hotline Solar Shrike Electric Fence Energiser
The Hotline Solar Shrike Electric Fence Energiser is a compact, portable solar-assisted energiser designed for small temporary electric fences up to 800 metres.
Combining the popular Hotline Shrike energiser with a 2.5W solar panel, the Solar Shrike provides a convenient solution for short electric fence lines where mains electricity is unavailable. In suitable sunlight, the solar panel provides power to the energiser, helping to reduce demand on the internal batteries. When there is insufficient sunlight, the unit continues to operate from its batteries.
Powered by two D-cell batteries, which are included, the Solar Shrike is particularly useful for small temporary fencing applications where portability, simple installation and low running costs are important.
Solar-Assisted Electric Fence Energiser
The Solar Shrike combines a 3V Shrike energiser with a 2.5W solar panel.
The solar panel helps power the energiser during suitable daylight conditions, extending the useful life of the batteries and reducing the frequency with which they need to be replaced.
This makes it a practical choice for seasonal and temporary electric fencing in remote locations where connecting to mains electricity would be difficult.

Ideal for Small Temporary Electric Fences
The Hotline Solar Shrike is designed primarily for short and relatively simple electric fence lines.
Its compact design makes it easy to install and relocate, making it particularly useful for temporary or seasonal fencing where the position of the fence may change.
The Shrike energiser can be conveniently hung from the fence line, a suitable post or earth stake, helping to keep installation simple and portable.
How the Solar Shrike Works
The 2.5W solar panel provides power to the energiser when sufficient sunlight is available.
When solar input is insufficient, the energiser continues operating from the internal D-cell batteries. This provides a simple hybrid arrangement that combines the convenience of replaceable batteries with the benefit of solar assistance.
The solar panel is adjustable, allowing it to be positioned to make effective use of available sunlight.

Choosing the Right Solar Fence Energiser
The Solar Shrike is a low-powered energiser intended for small temporary enclosures.
For longer fences, electric netting or fencing where significant vegetation is likely to contact the conductors, a more powerful electric fence energiser should be considered.
Fence performance also depends on the quality of the installation, including:
- Fence length
- Number of electrified strands
- Type of conductor
- Vegetation touching the fence
- Condition of the batteries
- Solar panel positioning
- Quality of the earthing system
Hotline specifies a minimum 1 metre earth stake for the Solar Shrike.
